Definition - What does Fall Protection mean?

Fall protection refers to a set of methods and work practices designed to limit or prevent the risk of falls in the workplace. An employee that works from heights between 4 to 10 feet from the ground or occupies tight workspaces to perform a job will require a fall protection plan. The statistics related to falls are an industry-wide problem with measures tailored to the line of work involved.

SureHire explains Fall Protection

Fall protection is an umbrella term defined by two categories: fall prevention and fall arrests. The former consists of barriers, guardrails/handrails, and surface protectors used in areas or worksites where fall hazards exist. The latter draws on personal protection equipment (PPE). For example, a worker may don a harness and lanyard(s) fitted with belts/cables running from anchor points to maneuver across heights. Also, a lifeline system unit doubles as a fail-safe method with built-in locks to protect the user in the event of a fall. This equipment can help sustain the momentum displaced by the person's body weight should they fall from an elevated platform or workstation. A retrieval system is also a mode of fall protection that serves as a part of a rescue plan. A hoist fixed to an anchor can help lift or remove a person from a confined space.

A policy geared toward fall protection avenues can mean the difference between injuries/fatalities and a safe workplace countered in the fold. A protocol aligned with tools and resources will keep employees in the know of fall protection laws in their province.
